Activists test police preparedness PDF Print E-mail

In a daring stunt that proved a first test of police preparations for the G-20 Summit, an octet of demonstrators rappelled over the side of the West End Bridge today and unfurled a large banner, then dangled above the Ohio River.

They remained there several hours, from mid-morning to early afternoon, before they were arrested.

The environmental group Greenpeace claimed credit for the incident as well as an effort, thwarted by police, to drop a similar banner warning of climate change from the Fort Pitt Bridge. Five people were arrested there.

The Pittsburgh G-20 Partnership's welcome package for visiting media is titled "The Inside Story" and includes a flash drive with regional highlights.

You, too, can have it all -- on the county Web site, at www.alleghenycounty.us/welcome, where the "story" is divided into four chapters:

"An International Region," "Green Technology & Innovation," "Weathering the Economic Storm" and "Serving Our Community." An example from the "Green" chapter is "Botanic Garden to be Built on Former Brownfield in County Park," about the reclamation and transformation of a 452-acre parcel in Settler's Cabin Park.

Some writers keep journals of their travels, and the rest of us? Well, suffice it to say that today will mark the beginning of a new feature in this space titled: Things that I miss about Pittsburgh.

-- Post-Gazette Pirates beat writer Dejan Kovacevic, February 2007

For a guy who loves Pittsburgh, the Post-Gazette's Dejan Kovacevic sure does leave a lot -- as many as 80 times a year. But he always comes back.

While he was on the road with the Pirates, Kovacevic used the Pirates Q&A feature to compile a list of things he missed about Pittsburgh, which over the past two years has morphed into things that make Pittsburgh great. Readers joined in, and together they came up with a list approaching 120. In reverse chronological order, here is the list so far (for archival accuracy and for old time's sake, items are as they were when they were written):

Suit: Police abusing powers to discourage summit protests PDF Print E-mail

Michael Henninger/Post-GazetteA troupe of ACLU "legal observers" in orange hats watched last night as dozens of police officers inspected a school bus used to prepare food for G-20 summit protesters and gave two traffic citations to its driver.

The bus, belonging to the Seeds of Peace Collective, had moved to a street off Larimer Avenue about 6:30 p.m., after city officials forced the group from a Lawrenceville location. Driver Randall Mark said he had parked the bus momentarily when officers told him to turn off the engine and began examining it from every angle.
