G-20 Sketch Blog: Bambi Meets Godzilla PDF Print E-mail

The only way I know how to describe the overkill of security at the G-20 is to compare it to a little animated film called "Bambi Meets Godzilla." In the film Bambi is frolicking in the field ... only to be squashed by Godzilla. There were way too many police with way too much equipment. The protesters seemed small in comparison. With the big lockdown, visitors had to squint through barbed wire to get a look at the city.

The locals in Pittsburgh didn't know what to make of the whole thing. These are actual things I heard people saying, with a little exaggeration added.

In case you missed it, here is my cartoon for today's paper. I think I saw that guy with the bandana in Lawrenceville yesterday. March on!

Last night as I was returning from attempting to follow the protesters (which was a little like chasing a tornado that kept breaking up into smaller storms) I was driving down Liberty Ave. in Bloomfield along with a line of swat vehicles filled with riot police. Small groups of the protesters were sitting on the sidewalks, their backs to the storefronts. The more violent factions had moved on to Oakland.

As I was driving I noticed police barriers blocking all of the small side streets. At first I thought they were there to contain protesters, but then I realized it was just Bloomfield preparing for their Italian Festival, "Little Italy Days." I could just imagine a young protester confronting one of the older residents about the police barriers.

So, you think all cartoonists sit at their drafting table out of harm's way. Not this one. I was right in the middle of it today, folks. I was in Lawrencville watching the faceoff between riot police and the Pittsburgh G-20 Resistance Project. The police came out in unbelievable force wearing riot gear and holding batons and shields and they even had dogs.

The police were also were driving the biggest beast of an armored vehicle I had ever seen. It made a Hummer look like a toy car. Didn't they get the word that this is a Green Summit? Mounted on top was a large device resembling a hollywood spotlight. This was some sort of sonic agitator that blasted a shrill, deafening noise that caused protesters to hold their ears. It was really annoying. I guess that was the idea. Anyway, there were a hundred media and onlookers to every two protesters. The only people being forced away were journalists. At one point a large group of onlookers started chanting "Let's Go Pens!" It was almost as loud and annoying as the sonic weapon.

Teresa Heinz, New Orleans jazz musicians and environmental leaders gathered at the Warhol Museum last night to celebrate clean energy. It was the place to be. The music was great and the message was greater: we need to hound our leaders until climate change legislation is passed.

Like any good journalist, I said a quick hello to Teresa Heinz and then pushed my way through the crowd to get to the bar. I was captivated by the "green martini" they were making, an obvious nod to the importance of going green. Oooh, shiny, I thought. And it looks like green Kool-Aid. Maybe they figured people would get so drunk they would have to walk home, thereby creating less emmissions. I did my best to support their theory.
